What is Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening is a highly sought-after dental procedure designed to enhance your smile's functionality and aesthetics. By carefully removing excess gum tissue and, if needed, a small portion of bone, crown lengthening reveals more of the tooth's surface, enabling the successful placement of dental restorations such as crowns, bridges, or veneers. This meticulous technique is typically performed by skilled periodontists or specialized dentists, ensuring precise results and optimal oral health. Crown lengthening can also address aesthetic concerns by reshaping the gum line, creating a more harmonious and captivating smile.

Why Choose Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening offers a compelling solution for individuals seeking to improve their dental health and enhance the aesthetics of their smile. Exposing more of the tooth's surface enables the successful placement of dental restorations while creating a more balanced and visually appealing smile. It also facilitates better oral hygiene by making it easier to clean the teeth effectively, reducing the risk of gum disease. Choosing crown lengthening can lead to improved dental health, enhanced smile aesthetics, and increased self-confidence.

Crown Lengthening Procedure

The procedure begins by numbing the area with local anesthesia. Small incisions are then made in the gum tissue to access the tooth and, if necessary, adjust the bone. After carefully reshaping the gum and bone, the area is cleaned, sutures are applied, and you'll receive guidance for a comfortable recovery.

Am I a candidate?

Crown lengthening will suit you if you have insufficient tooth structure, such as teeth that are extensively decayed, fractured, or broken near or below the gum line. Excessive gum tissue covering their teeth, leading to a "gummy smile," can also be corrected with crown lengthening. It can also treat periodontal concerns, such as gum disease or inadequate tooth structure exposed above the gum line, improve access for better oral hygiene, and reduce the risk of further periodontal issues. Our dental professionals will thoroughly evaluate your specific dental needs, oral health condition, and desired outcomes to provide personalized recommendations.

Post Treatment Care

After crown lengthening, it is normal to experience pain, bleeding, swelling, and seeping. Avoid touching the area with your fingers or tongue, and refrain from forcefully rinsing or using a straw. Applying a gauze pad to the wound for 30 minutes can help reduce bleeding. Take prescribed medications and mouth rinses as directed. For the first week, limit oral hygiene to gentle brushing with a soft toothbrush, avoiding dental floss and strong mouth rinses. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and after 36 hours, switch to moist heat. Stay hydrated, avoid spicy or acidic foods, and refrain from tobacco and alcohol. Rest and avoid strenuous activities for a few days. If a bandage is used, it will come off naturally within 24 hours, and gentle cleaning can begin with a mouth rinse and a cotton swab.
