Migraines? It Might Be TMJ

Migraine It Might Be TMJ

August 2023

TMJ can cause migraine-like headaches

Did you know a study found that 100% of people with chronic migraines had TMJ, compared to just 54% of those without migraines? There are several ways that TMJ can trigger a migraine-like headache, and fixing your TMJ pain can be the cure to your migraine misery. Keep reading to learn more about how TMJ can cause migraine-like headaches and how to get TMJ treatment to stop the pain.

The link between migraines and TMJ

Temporomandibular disorders  (TMD) is a collective term embracing a number of clinical problems that involve the chewing muscles, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated structures, or both. This is also called Temporomandibular Pain Disorder Syndrome by at least some. The syndrome is described as pain and tenderness of the chewing muscles, joint sounds with jaw opening, and limited jaw movement. Pain in the TMJ may occur in one in ten of the population, and TMD has been reported in nearly one-half of the US population.

There are many ways that TMJ and TMD can cause migraines to occur. Malocclusion occurs when teeth are not lined up properly and, as such, can cause strain on certain muscles around the TMJ, the neck, the shoulders, and the back. This tension can quickly lead to migraines. In addition, in severe TMJ cases, nerves can become overworked and over sensitized, leading to migraines. Sudden movements that irritate the TMJ, such as opening too wide to eat certain foods, chewing gum, or eating something crunchy, can all lead to migraines.

What to do about TMJ pain?

Luckily, treatment is available for TMJ pain, and you do not have to suffer from TMJ and migraines any longer. Untreated TMJ pain can lead to further health issues, such as tinnitus, muscle spasms, locking of the TMJ joint, depression, poor quality of life, and much more. Pain in the jaw might not be related to TMJ, so a proper diagnosis from a TMJ specialist can help determine the correct course of action and individualized treatment plan. Treatment can include lifestyle changes, physical therapy, surgery, appliances, and medication.

Everyone has a different cause for what initially triggered their TMJ and TMD. Whether it is dental issues, an injury, or the natural anatomy of the face, there are ways to fix your pain and have you living a better quality of life.
